Feb 3, Leaving Penticton

At the Hog's Breath, a dynamic and eclectic crew gathers for the show--myself, Greedy Parker (whose name remains unexplained to me, other than the obvious) and Candis Davis. My hosts tonight are three little goddesses who share an adobe house in Penticton, their endless boxes of recycling piling on the front lawn until their chariot gets a new carburetor. The first goddess is Candis, whose passion for nature has sparked an inspired campaign to rid the world of plastic. As the till worker at a local organic food market, she launches her crusade with the same love and devotion that pours forth in her songwriting. Goddess Eswen is a fiery skateboarder who paints colorful, dramatic faces emerging from surreal landscapes that decorate the heavenly abode. Back at their home after the show, we drink wine by the light of the fireplace in the living room, where Goddess Amy straddles a drum that she continuously and sporadically strikes, its deep stacatto perhaps meant to emphasize words her voice does not.

They have a fish tank resting on a shelf at the foot of the built-in bathtub. In the morning as I shower, I see a long eel slithering through the tank. They tell me that they are only taking care of the fish for a friend. But after a night with the goddesses, I begin to believe that the eel is the reincarnation of all the lovers who have wronged them in past lives. They have cast the poor souls to live in this snake-like body, doomed to forever watch them dance in the shower unable to respond to their teasing.

Presently, Candis is planning an event of goddess worship--art, music, craft, poetry--for the day that I return through Penticton (Sunday, Mar 6). So keep posted and I'll let you know as concert details unfold! (Pictures of the goddesses shall follow soon!)
