Sidebar--Thoughts on Cereal
CS loves cereal. He worships it like most people worship . . . television. So I thought I would share a) an excerpt of a letter we recently sent out to our families, and b) CS's kind response extolling the virtues of cereal and taking the whole metaphor to a level I never before dreamed. . .
excerpt from our letter:
"On the cusp of the new year we are experiencing what I have coined “Cereal Aisle Syndrome.” Have you experienced it? Standing in the cereal aisle, you become overwhelmed, paralyzed by the number of options, choices, and directions available. Do you seek out those familiar Shreddies that you’ve been enjoying since childhood and seem to do the job alright? Or do you venture out for something with a little more kick: hello Frosted Flakes! Go healthy, but damn granola is expensive. Oatmeal may do it, but Oatmeal Crisp is your favorite, though not on sale like the Raisin Bran. Curtis likes Cheerios and if you buy two boxes you get a dollar off, but where would we fit that mama-jama big ass box?!@# AAHHHHHH!!
We’ve narrowed it down. We’ve got a few boxes in the cart, (but no buns in the oven, thank you!) and are really enjoying the adventure of a new city together. We’re full of excitement and promise and frustration, and we’re getting ready for an evening of good food and wine and conversation to welcome in the new year. We’ll be thinking of all of you, (as we always do!) and wishing you the best from love and happiness in the new year."
response from Cereal Guru CS:
"In reading through your letter I had to pause to see what exactly I had for cereal in my cupboard. Not sure how you guys feel about the all-day, any time food of the week, but I surely consider myself a cereal-o-holic. I eat it in the morning, afternoon, night, 3 a.m.... 3 a.m. craving? Yes, I'm in the kitchen pouring my 10th bowl of the day.
Cereal is and always will be a main food group, perhaps taking the place of candy at some point down the road. What names spark my interest? Well, Tony the Tiger and his Frosted Flakes had a major influence on my high school life—the time period where I rediscovered the greatest food known to man. My award-winning, and eventual student rep council-winning speech and skit featured yours truly dressed as the lovable tiger, encouraging all youth to adopt cereal as their food mainstay. Not kidding.
From there, off to college I stumbled, where I learned how to live on a budget. Yes, granola is damn expensive. However, it sparks a movement inside once or twice a week (depending on your intake) that would make dance instructors drool. Consider granola a treat.
Might I suggest the always fun "combo bowl". Here you'll find the bottom of the box goodies from numerous boxes swimming in milk, together in perfect harmony. Some suggestions include Shreddies with Oatmeal Crisp and Special K. Other features have Raisin Bran crossing paths with Rice Krispies. Go heavy on the brown sugar when you need a little pick-me-up. Eat cereal early and often everyday. Douse it in milk, as there's always room for seconds and thirds—don't waste that splash of milk in the bottom. Soak it up with another helping.
Cereal-eating etiquette asks all eaters to re-use their bowl for one entire day. Don't dirty three or four bowls in a 24-hour span—use the same bowl. It's a lighter dishwashing load."
That's the cereal episode. I'm going to beg CS for more journal entries on cereal, which he claims are in abundance!
